BIOGRAPHY

Matej Mijalić is a Croatian violinist born in Rijeka and is currently based in London, UK. He started his musical education in his hometown of Rijeka. After his elementary school graduation, he enrolled in the “highly talented junior program” at the Universitat Fur Kunst und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna under Professor Marina Sorokowa. In 2017 he enrolled at the Academy of Music in Zagreb where he studied with Professor Orest Shourgot and Professor Leonid Sorokow., from which he graduated in 2022 with honours. During his studies, he performed as a soloist with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra with which he recorded the Brahms Violin Concerto in D major. He is currently enrolled on a full scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music in London where he works with the renowned soloist and concertmaster of the LSO, Roman Simović.

 During his studies, he performed with the Zagreb Soloists Ensemble, the Zagreb Young Musicians Orchestra, the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, the HRT Tamburitza Orchestra, the Rucner Quartet, and the MUZA Symphonic Orchestra. In 2021. he was added to the Dean's list for his concert with the Philharmonic, he was also awarded the Rector's prize two years prior for his role as a concertmaster of the SOMA Symphonic Orchestra for the performance of the J. Massnet's opera “Cindarella”. In 2022. for his recording of the Brahms Violin concerto in D major, he was awarded the “Stjepan Šulek” Fundation prize for the best recording of the piece from the violin repertoire. In 2019. he was the absolute winner and the winner of the best-performed piece by a Croatian composer of the “Young Virtuoso Competition" in Zagreb. In the same year he was the overall winner and the audience prize winner of the “Lions Grand Prix” competition for which he was awarded recitals in Croatia and Austria. In 2022. he was awarded the “Prize of city of Samobor” for his performance on the “Ferdo Livadić" Competition in Croatia. In 2022. he was awarded the first prize at the 7th International Music Competition “Mark and Pioneer” held in Los Angeles. He was the absolute winner of the 19th edition of the “Rudolf Matz Competition" held in Croatia. Matej regularly performs alongside Liechtenstein Symphonic Orchestra , Zagreb Soloist Ensamble and the “Acoustic Project” Ensamble. 

Matej has had the privilege of closely working with the worlds leading soloists and pedagogues such as Roman Simović, Marc Bouchkov, Goetz Richter, Dan Zhu, Yova Yordanova, Sreten Krstić. He held concerts as a soloist and orchestral musicians in Italy, Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Montenegro, France, England and Scotland, in venues such as the Berlin Philharmonie in Berlin, “Bozar” Concert hall in  Bruxelles, la Seine Musicale in Paris, Dortmund Concerthaus and Teatro Malibran in Venice. He has recorded pieces by A. Vivaldi and J.S.Bach with the Saint Joachim Ensamble. He recorded the op. 6 duo sonatas in full with professor Orest Shourgot and the violin sonata by Josip Štolcer Slavenski alongside pianist David Vuković for the music archive of the National Radio Television, Zagreb. From 2023. Matej is awarded the “Viktor Ružić” Fundation scholarship for his achievements which funds his studies. He is the concertmaster of the ”Young Musicians Orchestra" in Zagreb and the “Juraj Dobrila" University Orchestra.
